Group 1 winner Scales Of Justice took out Friday night’s Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley but the feature-race win was overshadowed with the death of sprinter Manuel.
Jockey Barend Vorster tumbled to the turf at the 100-metre mark after Manuel’s front legs gave way in an attempt to take a narrow gap in the fighting finish of the group 2 race.
Vorster was back on his feet post-race but taken for observations with reports of a suspected broken collarbone, chest pain and a cut over his eye, while the green screen was taken on to the Valley straight to euthanise Manuel.
Manuel, a winner of more than $800,000 prizemoney, tried to stand but couldn’t weight-bear on his front legs and was in noticeable pain.
Co-trainer Calvin McEvoy was one of the first onto the course to comfort the injured gelding.
