Veteran dance choreographer and Hokkien Chinese migrant Mrs L Zhang has not missed a Lunar Festival since 1996.

With Sydney’s Chinese New Year celebrations becoming increasingly popular, what began as a “small scale collaboration between Chinese organisations”, she says, has since “grown year by year, livelier, bigger, more festive, to what is now an unparalleled and exceptional festival.”

Mrs Zhang, 81,  is an “honorary choreographer and team leader” for the Australian Hokkien Huay Kuan Association, a community cultural organisation that has participated in the Lunar Festival for more than a decade.

She established the association’s first dance group in 2007: a troupe of “extremely dedicated” amateur dance enthusiasts whose catalogue of skills include square dancing, Chinese waist drumming, and “much more complicated and challenging” folk dancing.
